The main aim of School Sport is to guarantee every child’s right to take part in physical activity. It is an organised sports activity that young people take part in during their school years, but outside school hours. It is organised at town level, and Bergara Town Council is directly involved.
Through School Sport and other sports activities, Aranzadi Ikastola creates sporting habits among students: it promotes, facilitates and organises the sports offer, and provides students with a wide range of opportunities in sports activity to complete their educational development. At present, 97.53% of Aranzadi’s Primary Education students take part in some kind of sports activity on a regular basis; 71.38% in multi-sport and 26.15% in another sports club.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF SCHOOL SPORT
- To promote and guarantee the use of Basque.
- To promote a culture that spreads the values of sport and physical activity.
- To promote coexistence: as our sports teams represent the Ikastola, we will work from an early age on values such as self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as the attitudes to be shown in different situations: equality between women and men, tolerance, integration, diversity, solidarity, sportsmanship, respect for referees and players from other teams, the value of fair play, personal responsibility and commitment, respect for the rules of the game…
JOLASHEZI
Pre-benjamin pupils are the youngest participants in school sport (Primary Education 1-2, aged 7-8), and the Jolashezi programme is their main focus. This programme uses play as its main tool and guarantees a non-competitive context, encouraging the participation of children with different kinds of abilities.
During the school year they have six gatherings, as well as two sessions every week, in the afternoon. The aim of the gatherings is to enjoy themselves through physical activity and build relationships with other children.
MULTI-SPORT
This is a multi-sport introductory programme: local, community-based, child-centred and not focused solely on competition. The local programme is organised taking into account the town’s sports offer, with the aim of promoting local clubs and groups. Benjamin pupils (Primary Education 3-4, aged 9-10) and alevin pupils (Primary Education 5-6, aged 11-12) take part, and, in addition to two sessions a week, they have gatherings or competitions at weekends.
The aim of the gatherings is to give visibility to non-hegemonic activities and broaden young people’s sporting experience, without a competitive tone. In competitions, on the other hand, visibility is given to Bergara’s sports teams, so that they may have continuity in the future.
MOUNTAINEERING
Although it is separate from the multi-sport programme, mountaineering is part of school sport. The three schools in Bergara organise mountain outings together, getting to know different places in Bergara and the surrounding area. This offer is aimed at all Primary Education children and families.
Throughout the year they organise six mountain outings, to enjoy Sundays in a family and nature-based atmosphere.
[PARENTS] FAIR PLAY DECALOGUE
- Children do not play to entertain people, nor to win. Children play to have fun.
- Applaud the efforts of all participants. The result is not the most important thing.
- Do not get angry with them for making mistakes, as they are learning. Make sure everything you say is positive.
- Show respect for everyone involved in the activity —students, coaches, referees, other parents and spectators…—.
- Give children the freedom to enjoy the activity and make decisions.
- Respect the referees’ decisions and encourage children to do the same and to play according to the established rules.
- Reject violence and inappropriate behaviour.
- At the end of the activity, value each person’s improvement, not the result achieved.
- Try to ensure that spectators follow these rules, so that the activity is beneficial for everyone.
- Your behaviour will be a role model for your children.
